In
1787, Reverends Richard Allen and Absalom Jones withdrew from the St. George Methodist
Church because of "unkind treatment" and restrictions placed upon worshippers
of African descent. They founded The Free African Society, which was the beginning
of the African Methodist In 1816, Richard Allen called together sixteen representatives
from Bethel African Church in Philadelphia, and African Churches in Baltimore,
Maryland; Wilmington, Delaware; Attleboro, Pennsylvania, and Salem, New Jersey,
to meet in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
A church organization or "connection" was organized as the African Methodist
Episcopal Church. Richard Allen was the founder and first Bishop of the African
Methodist Episcopal Church.

History of Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal
Church.
Rev. W.J. Conquest founded Emmanuel
AME Church in 1944. The church was built in 1961 by Rev. G.L. Grant. The trustees
at that time were E. Bell, J. Bowen, M. Derby, E. Goff, D. Jackson, D. Johnson,
E. Logan and J. Ussery.

Rev.
Dr. Lewis E. Logan, II, Senior Pastor.
On
August 5, 2001, The Reverend Doctor Lewis E. Logan, II preached his first sermon
at Emmanuel A.M.E. Church. He was appointed the position as Senior Pastor in July
by Bishop John R. Bryant, the Presiding Prelate of the Fifth Episcopal District.
Rev. Dr. Logan, a native of Baltimore, Maryland and the eldest son of Mr. and
Rev. Lewis (Florence) Logan, entered the ministry at the age of 17 at the historic
Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church under the pastoral leadership of the
then Reverend John R. Bryant.

Rev. Dr. Logan
has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Morehouse College. He earned both a Master
of Divinity and a Master of Theology degree from Candler School of Theology, Emory
University in Atlanta, Georgia. While attending Candler, he served as president
of the Black Caucus, and was instrumental in establishing a Black Church Studies
Program. Rev. Dr. Logan earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from Columbia Theological
Seminar in Decatur, Georgia.
Prior
to arriving at Emmanuel A.M.E. Church, he was the Senior Pastor of the Mother
Church of African Methodism in the State of Georgia, St. Philip Monumental, Savannah,
GA. As Pastor and Community Organizer for more than fifteen years, he has coordinated
national events, facilitated Visioning Sessions, Annual Conferences, District
Meetings, Leadership Retreats, Re-organizational Strategic Planning Sessions and
Plenary Sessions.
Rev. Dr. Logan has received national recognition of achievement as an "Outstanding
Young Man of America" and was featured in Who's Who in American Colleges
and Universities. His ministerial travels have been both international and national:
Quebec, Vancouver, B.C., Ontario, Brussels, East Germany, West Germany, Bermuda,
Washington, D.C., Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee, California, Illinois, New York,
Kansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan, Texas and Florida.
Rev. Dr. Logan is
married to the former Sudonna Moss and is the father of two boys, Lewis III and
Asa Bomani Diop; and one girl Jillique Marche'.
